Wilmette was created by the 1924 merger of two villages, Wilmette and Gross Pointe. There were distinct differences among the two villages and the differences are still recognizable in the landscape today. Native Americans were the first group to inhabit this area. By 1942, the boundaries were expanded and by 1951 the west side of Wilmette was rapidly changing.
