Chicago’s Lakeview comprises various neighborhoods: Lakeview East, Boystown, Wrigleyville, Southport Corridor, and Sheridan Station Corridor.
Lakeview has grown into an upscale neighborhood with a deep history and unknown future.
In the 19th century Chicagoans poured into the region north of Lakeview, as it was America’s celery capital. The truck farms were turned into suburban subdivisions by the newcomers and eventually, Lakeview was voted on whether or not it should become part of Chicago because it was not going to last on its own. It grew into a prosperous industrial neighborhood with booming businesses. By the 1970s, the population of Lakeview began to shift and became a more diverse community including old German families, Southerners, Hispanics, Japanese Americans, and hippies. They co-existed well together and the diverse community worked. Lakeview has taken many names over the years, including New Town, Wrigleyville, Boystown, Belmont Harbor, and Graceland West, but nothing stuck to replace the name. Lakeview developed into the neighborhood that is found today.
Lakeview offers high-rise apartments with rooftop pools, two or three-story walk-ups, and boutique buildings. There are historic districts in the Lakeview East Community. Alta Vista Terrace Historic Center was built in imitation of the rowhouse style in London. Some of the features that are included are Doric and Ionic wood pilasters, gothic arches, Palladian windows, stained and led glass fanlights, bay and bow windows, and various decorative woodwork. The Meekerville Historic District has residential properties that are included on the National Register of Historic Places in Chicago.
Enjoy cuisine from around the world from the comfort of Lakeview. Whether you have a taste for Filipino, Venezuelan, Kurdish, Japanese, or classic American cuisine there are plenty of options. Sochi Saigonese Kitchen has decorative greenery, upbeat techno music, and a dining room with energy and warmth. Their menu is full of combinations of sweet, spicy, tart, and umami flavors. Zaza’s is a New York-style pizza shop with a thin and chewy crust. Bring your own beverage and enjoy Zaza’s long list of toppings. Indulge in wood-fired pizza and more Italian favorites from Frasca Pizzeria & Wine Bar. Enjoy a weekend brunch at Mortar and Pestle for their twist on classic brunch dishes such as breakfast fried rice and foie gras and eggs.
