This area was originally a large prairie with the Indian Trail running through it. In 1848, the trail was straightened and became Milwaukee Avenue. Avondale developed along this road along with train lines and a parallel route to the Chicago River. By the 1920s, the population had grown immensely and was full of many German immigrants as well as some Swedes and Austrians.
Avondale is on the Northwest side of the city with architectural characteristics of steeples, smokestacks, and uniform two-flat buildings making up the neighborhood. Many buildings in this neighborhood were designed by Louis Sullivan and can be seen in the patterns and details of the architecture.
